The old building and its resistance to earthquakes

The structural issues with Yoshida Dormitory’s old building were discovered more than 30 years ago. Furthermore, in 2005 and 2012, surveys were conducted of the old building to determine its resistance to earthquakes. The surveys found that the building was in need of structural reinforcement and repairs.

*Method of survey - Calculation of the strength of the old section of the dormitory was based on the ‘earthquake resistant design manual for traditional style wooden buildings’

*surface damage – minor wear and tear on the inside and out of the building

The survey of the old section of the dormitory also included recommendations for a repair plan to the building that would make it resistant to earthquakes. The report clearly stated that it is possible to make repairs to Yoshida Dormitory and if appropriate steps are taken, the building will not collapse in the case of an earthquake. In 2006, the Yoshida Dormitory Committee and the Kyoto University authorities entered into talks and agreed to the implementation of the above repair plan. However, the university did not ultimately provide the funding required and the plan never came to fruition.

It is disappointing that repairs to Yoshida Dormitory have never occurred. However, anyone who comes to Yoshida Dormitory and sees for themselves the old building preserved just as it has been for 100 years can see the amount of history that our dorm has accumulated.
