Fire protection measures
1
This section moves on to talk about fire risks to Yoshida Dormitory. The old section of the dorm is made of wood. Therefore, it is likely that in the case of a fire, the blaze would spread far more quickly than in a concrete building. To deal with this risk, Yoshida Dormitory takes the following measures. We have installed two fire alarms in each room and each corridor of the dormitory. All of these alarms are set to maximum sensitivity. This sometimes causes an issue when the fire alarms react to smoke from cooking. For example, if a resident heats oil in a frypan, it will produce smoke, and even after only 3 minutes, this smoke can become enough to fill the hallway and trigger the fire alarm.
2
When a fire alarm sounds, after confirming the location of the particular alarm, a student will enter the reception area and make an announcement over the loudspeaker to the entire dormitory. Other residents will then take nearby fire extinguishers and rush to area of the fire. They then confirm whether or not the fire is a false alarm as a result of cooking etc. If it is a real fire, the student in the reception area calls the fire department and the students already at the scene act as the initial fire fighters.
3
All new entrants to Yoshida Dormitory are trained during orientation on how to react to an announcement about a fire and the possibility of occasional false alarms as a result of cooking etc.
4
There are 37 fire extinguishers installed in the old section of the dormitory and also 8 fire hydrants.
5
Students are taught to use the fire extinguishers in disaster prevention drills which are carried out in collaboration with the fire department. (These drills usually occur every two years and are alternated with biennial workshops on how to use automated external defibrillator machines)
