Breaking the boundaries between graduate and undergraduate students
Graduate and undergraduate students all live together in Yoshida Dormitory meaning that students have the opportunity to meet people studying a wide range of disciplines and come together to discuss ideas. For example, we often organise academic reading sessions and roundtable seminars on various topics. Below is a list of some of the literature we have covered so far:
-
"Modern quantum mechanics" by J. J. Sakurai
-
"The birth of prison" by M. Foucault
-
"Empire - the world order of globalization and the possibility of multitude" A. Negri & M. Heart
-
"Fluid dynamics" by Tsutomu Masumi
-
"Statistical learning theory" by Takafumi Kanamori
-
We also held an event called “Research chat” where three of our graduate students presented their current research
We do not have a set structure for running these academic sessions and undergraduate and graduate students are equally free to express their opinions. When students from different disciplines come together and share ideas, it’s amazing what they can achieve.
(For example, one of our residents who studies literature picked up an interest in electronics. We couldn’t believe it when he ended up inventing a device which links LED lights to audio files so that the lights flash in time with the music!)
