The value of the Yoshida Dormitory old building

There is no doubt that the old section of Yoshida Dormitory is old and dilapidated. However, it is obvious that this more than 100 -year-old building has huge architectural and historical value. In fact, the Japanese Institute of Architectural History (Kinki branch) has recently submitted an application to the have the old section of Yoshida Dormitory heritage listed. Moreover, for the past 100 years, the old building has been a space where students have lived a unique lifestyle and a huge number of events have been held. Yoshida Dormitory therefore has value not just as a historical relic, but as a home and meeting place that is still used by many people today.

Yoshida Dormitory was established in 1913. However, the building was in fact originally a high school boarding house made in 1889. Yoshida Dormitory is therefore constructed according to building techniques and design from the Meiji and Taisho eras. Most student dormitories established during this period were torn down and rebuilt during the 1980s, making Yoshida Dormitory the oldest student boarding house still in use in Japan.
